A group of more than 20 European tractor-pull enthusiasts visited Nelson County Thursday to examine “Blue Blazes,” Mike Wilhite’s New Holland competition tractor.

The group, which consisted of Dutch and Swiss travelers, was led by Dirk and Anna Meijer.

On a 13-day trip, the group visited spots in Wisconsin, Illinois, including the Caterpillar factory, Indiana and Kentucky for the highlight of the trip, the National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville.

Dirk Meijer said tractor pulling was introduced to the Netherlands in 1977 and his brother would take him to events, sparking his interest in the sport.

Meijer has been an editor of the Dutch “Truck and Tractor Pulling Magazine,” for more than 25 years and has been leading tours for tractor devotees in the U.S. since 1993. He also leads trips to Great Britain, Canada, Australia and other European locations.

Tractor pulling is a worldwide event, but it is biggest in the U.S., Anna Meijer said.

“Tractor pulling over there is like NASCAR here,” Wilhite said.

On his second trip to visit Wilhite’s shop, Dirk Meijer said the group was “pleased to visit Mike and learn. Mike is very experienced,” he said.

“These guys are really interested in techniques,” Anna Meijer said.

Wilhite’s New Holland tractor is of particular interest since he is “one of only a few who runs New Holland,” and there’s still a lot of Ford and New Holland tractors being used in Europe, Meijer said.

The Meijers bring about three groups to the U.S. each year.

“This year, for the first time ever, the best European tractor will come to the U.S. to pull for four months and at the Grand National pulling event,” Dirk Meijer said.

The couple also hosts tractor travel events in the Netherlands where there are more than 150 tractor pulls. For more information, visit www.tractor-travels.nl.
